I use a USB keyboard and mouse. So do a lot of other people. Me
thinks that USB should be a priority.
PS/2 is more popular, so you have an alternative, well, 2 including
serial.
Considering there is no alternative to networking, I would say that is
more important.
USB is however very close, it just isn't a priority for 0.3.0.
I'm not saying it won't be ready for 0.3.0, just that it isn't a
prerequisite.
This is still very much pre-alpha software thus it's still only aimed
at developers, testers and enthusiasts. If USB is the only option you
have, then you should use a virtual machine until it's ready. I'm
pretty sure all mobo's still include PS/2 ports though, so if you were
that intent on using ROS right now, you can always pick up a mouse for
a couple of dolars.
That being said, USB keyboard and mouse was working in HEAD when I
tried it today :)

Making USB-support a prerequisite for 0.3.0 doesn't mean, that it will
be implemented sooner, but a release has to support USB to be called
0.3.0 if USB-support is a prerequisite for 0.3.0.
Anyway, try the USB-Mouse and USB-Keyboard legacy options in your BIOS,
with this two options enabled your mouse and keyboard should work.
