Hello devs, Few users at spanish ReactOS blog ( http://reactos.wordpress.com ) are asking about having both Windows and ReactOS installed in different partitions at the same time...
And i wanted you to answer, rather than me... :P
What would you say? Is it currently possible?
I'm sure Maya Posch has a highly active project called the ReactOS Synthesis Project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/reactos-synth/) which is supposed to patch a Windows install with ReactOS files - apparently it isn't dead yet and even she herself says that. And it's only been 795 days since that message, so it must be pretty well up to date.
I think it might be possible - but only to the extent where you're using the Windows bootloader. I've never tried it though.

I find combination of words "Maya", "project" and "active" highly hilarious.

I think there has been a slight error in education here. What she doesn't understand is one day is equal to 24 hours. It does not equal 24 million years, contrary to what some may have had her believe. On Tue, 14 Sep 2010 19:38:16 +1000, Olaf Siejka caemyr@gmail.com wrote:

Hello Javier!
You can install ReactOS and Windows on different partitions of the same harddisk and both should work fine.
But there are a few restrictions imposed by ReactOS and Setup: 1) If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, ReactOS Setup cannot add an Entry to the BCD (Boot Configuration Database). Adding an Entry manually might work. OTOH, ReactOS adds an Entry to the boot.ini (used by all Windows versions up to XP) file automatically if it finds this file upon setup.
2) ReactOS needs to write to boot.ini. If Windows is installes on an NTFS partition, you will have to add a Boot Entry manually because ReactOS cannot write to this file.
3) Right now, ReactOS has some issues accessing logical drives in extended partitions. These need to be fixed first.
I did not test this with a recent version, so other restrictions might apply or ReactOS might fail for other reasons. But if you have an unused harddisk, you might want to try it.
But be warned: Do not try this with a harddisk that hat you use to work with! ALL DATA ON THAT DISC MIGHT GET LOST!!!!
Regards, Eric

Can the ReactOS boot loader start up existing Windows 9X/Windows NT based systems?

Hi Adam,
the boot loader was able to boot existing Windows 9X systems and AFAIK later versions are able to boot Windows XP too. But I have not tried this for a few years.
