How does this work? I can't find anything in the wiki about this and it seems a bit of a grey area.
There has been quite a bit of discussion about the UI recently, and I've had a few people asking me how they can get involved, as they are finding it difficult to get their ideas accepted. Two good designs that spring to mind are that of crappish and Dominic.
Due to the recent interest in the GUI, I would be relatively interested in getting some of their ideas into ReactOS. I know Alex has some thoughts on improvements for 0.3 also
For instance, I think the button icon and menu graphic Dominic did are much fresher and easier on the eye (see attached ... the graphic text needs tweaking). However I don't know whether I can just commit, whether there is a vote, whether MindFlyer can overrule us, etc. <<start.jpg>> Can we set some rules down so no toes are stepped on.
Thanks, Ged.

Wow, Dominic's design is just amazing. Is that a real local copy or a mockup? I'm all for it, the icons and all are great!

Nice.
I have a few comments. The product name is ReactOS. Not Reactos. Not ROS. Why do we need both "Turn Off..." and "Terminate ROS Explorer"? Does "Terminate ROS Explorer" go to the console? If so, then why not call it "Go to console" instead? Yes, I don't run ReactOS much - shame on me ;-) ... are usually used when there isn't enough space left to write what you want to write. There is lots of space here to write "Log Off User" and "Turn Off Computer".

"Turn Off..." calls ExitWindowsDialog in Shell32, but because it is not implemented yet in ReactOS nothing will happen.
"Terminate ROS Explorer" does what the name suggests: explorer gets terminated. Under windows that means that you can start windows explorer under ros it means that it shuts down.

Hi,
[Casper Hornstrup]
Ok. So "Terminate ROS Explorer" is useless under ReactOS and should be removed.
[David Hinz]
As far as I know, ROS Explorer is developed under Windows and also tested there, so this option makes sense. Maybe it should stay in svn, but there should be a possibility to deactivate this for the releases.
I deactivated this menu item for ReactOS builds. It is still available for Windows builds.

Martin
Hmm, it was very useful when starting to cmd and start explorer then, I could go to cmd again this way...

Elipses (...) are also used in menu items when clicking on the item will result in some sort of dialog box before any real action is actually taken.
So if clicking the 'Turn Off Computer' were to result in a prompt giving (for example) the option of Turning Off or Cancelling, then it should be written 'Turn Off Computer...'. But if clicking it immediately initiates the shutdown process then it should have no '...'. The dots just gives the user a subtle hint that there will be more required to perform the action after clicking the item.

Which OS does this? Windows has it for Run..., but not for Shut Down. But Run can do many things. Run a program, open a document, open an URL. It's kind of hard to make space for it all.

Check for example Microsoft Word. "Edit/Paste" doesn't have elipses 'cause the command is just carried out. "Edit/Past Special..." does have them, you will get a modal dialog box before the command is carried out. I think it's part of the CUA, on which the original UI guidelines for Windows were based. See e.g. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISJ/is_n3_v31/ai_12547724/pg_6:
"Action option windows contain options that allow a user to further specify an action request. They appear when a user selects an action choice, such as "Print...", from a menu. Menu choices that cause action windows to be displayed are called action choices and are followed by ellipses. This provides a visual cue for users, indicating that no action will occur until further dialog is completed."

Ah ok. So it being missing on Shut Down is an UI bug ;-)
It should still be a complete sentence IMHO (I.e. Turn Off Computer... vs. Turn Off...).

You'll find that the 'classic' windows start menu follows the convention. The newer XP one ignores it for the Log Off and Shut Down for what I can only assume is eye candy purposes.
Anyway, afaik it is more of a general UI convention rather than a specific thing Windows does. I'm not sure where the practice originated but it is now used across many OSs and applications, including Windows, MacOS and a lot of Unix GUIs.
As a random example, the attached image is the Firefox 'File' menu which I just happened to be using at the moment. Some of the menu items have ... and some don't, and you will notice the difference is the ones that do have it will result in dialog boxes coming up for further actions (eg. Save Page As...), while the ones without are immediate actions (eg. New Tab).
The same convention is used in the following apps I just sampled: iTunes on Mac, Gimp on Linux, Word on Windows.
Cheers Derek

I like the one on the left hand side. The icons and the overall design are sleeker and appear to be developed pretty well. However, I was wondering if the UI coordinator could add a themed look to the start menu. I would love to see a Windows XP-style menu because I like the frequently used program list and the pin to menu feature. I would also like to see transparency and theming in general (either by a theme file, or xml based theming). I know these are far off but it would be nice to see.
