On occasions I have grabbed the latest binaries and replaced the ReactOS folder. It always works for me and seems to be a very quick and easy way of updating ROS without the need for burning a CD everytime.
I would say the binaries are very useful

Hi all
Do we really need the binary download anymore? The binary is highly downloaded, but I suspect that those that do download it then proceed to the iso/livecd/bochs/qemu downloads which are more usable (if they aren't too frustrated at that point).
Should we remove it? Does anyone object to that?

Hi Gedi
Ok, good point. Let's rename them to 'update' with an explanation that they're for updating an existing installation only.
Cheers Jason

I agree that the binary download is a quick and simple way to update or install ReactOS but it does not update the Registry. Only a full install from CD will create an up-to-date Registry. And this will get worse in the future.
That's why I vote for dropping the binary download. We will have to support updates in our installer applications instead.

Hi Eric
Sounds good; but what about registry entries that have been created by applications; would such an update wipe the registry or just add new entries and modify system entries?
Thanks Jason

Jason,
Registry entries won't cause any trouble because the registry hives will not be re-created upon an update. Outdated registry settings will be deleted and new entries will be added. Therfore we need to add two new sections to the hive???.inf files '[AddOnUpdate]' and '[DeleteOnUpdate]'.
Application-specific settings will not be changed at all.
