Umm... this is not strictly true. You *can* install an OS on an extended
partition. You just can't put the boot strap on an extended partition.
Note that this is not a discussion about how *wise* such a thing would
be...
Actually, with an intelligent boot loader, you can chainload to a logical
partition. This can be done with GRUB, GAG, LILO, and probably others. Often
the only supported 'extended partition' format is the MS-DOS one, but
sometimes others (eg, BSD partitions) are supported too.
