I don't know who all has names in the race but my vote would be for Fireball. He has done quite a
lot of work helping on translation and international issues in ReactOS and I think with the
Russian Translation of the website and been helping others to translate ReactOS in to thier native
language.
Thanks

Hi all
Vizzini has officially stepped down from the kernel coordinator
position. It's a pity that legalities and the nature of his business
have put him in this position. I've expressed our thanks for his input
and contributions to the project to Vizzini.
The kernel coordinator position will be up for vote for nominiated
candidates. This will only happen after the UI team has settled.
In case you're wondering, the project coordinator position, which I've
been sitting on for around 7/8 years now, will also be up for vote in
the near future. This will only happen once we've nailed down a
constitution for the project (and no, I'm not leaving the project,
just opening things up).
Regards
Jason

Jason,
Due to a few unfortunate legal changes related to work that I can't
really avoid, I'm going to have to officially step down as the kernel
coordinator. I haven't had any time to work on the project lately
anyway, so it's probably better to just make it official. I've had a
blast working with you guys over the past couple of years, and I hope
to be able to contribute again some day.
I'll try to keep an eye on things in case there are questions that I
am needed for, but that doesn't seem to be happening too often.
Thanks again for letting me participate in the project. I'm sorry I
haven't been able to contribute more lately, and I wish I didn't have
to jump off the train completely, but such is life.
Thanks!
-Vizzini

Indeed. Now, after few hours of sleep, I'm still hardly the sharpest
tool in a shed but at least my thoughts can run straight line...
I forgot to mention something.. Approachability.
Now I want you to think of regular user who uses his windows machine
at work for e-mail and Word -writings.. Now, give him two computers,
both have exactly same OS (say ROS) but with different approach for
GUI (one that looks like windows and another one which kinda looks
like windows but still looks like something else and somewhat acts
like windows)... Now, which one do you think he/she is going to go
for? To the windows look-alike. But why? Because it has higher
approachability.
I've seen this happen thousand times. People are afraid of anything
new and sometimes even refuse to learn anything new if it is
_absolutely_ necessary (i.e. if the old means are still usable even
though not nearly as efficent as the new ones). Even though I'd love
nothing more than to design fully new and revolutional concept for UI
it is simply not efficent in this case IF ReactOS aims to be "another
windows".
The reason why I am driving this "another windows" concept is that it
is basically the very mind and soul of ROS. The ultimate goal is to be
100% Windows compatible, but if the UI isn't Windows like the users
will see it not as "another windows" but as "another OS" which then
makes ROS to lose it's desired market value. (as windows compatible
OS) If the user can't clearly distinct the fact that it really is
"another windows" how can you expect him to realize that ROS really is
100% windows compatible AND you can run all your regular Windows
software on it? Put a tag line on the boot screen? Not going to work,
nor will the same line work on web-page, because regular users usually
won't change their working OS by downloading and burning another one
from internet but by observation. They will see someone else use it,
maybe even try it themselves, perhaps think that they are using
Windows but then realize that while they are doing everything they
needed to do they are doing it it completely new environment. Of
course to achieve this there has to be distinct clues that you are not
in your regular Windows but also it has to look like Windows at the
first glance.
If it does look like Windows regular users will expect it to work like
Windows (hence they can immediately start using it) and they will most
likely will expect to run the same software because it looks and feels
like Windows.

I've been posting to the web-list, just to keep things clearer, as
there is so much other stuff going on at the dev-list. Besides, I'm
not even subscribed to other lists than web and general..
So check the web-dev if you have something to ask. :)

I just noticed that this was sent to ros-web only.

To: ros-web(a)reactos.com
Greetings.
I am the other half of Jason's "list", the half that (usually)
responds to the name Mikko.
Something about me: I've seen 25 summers, so far. (a.k.a I'm 25-years
old ;) This summer would be my 26th. Usually my interests include
badminton, rollerskating, bandy, gentle loving of my car (My one and
only honey at the time. Hey, at least she's cheaper than a woman ;),
movies, programming, reading (Usually different articles of various
topics. Specially anything regarding of science.) and some sort of
graphics.
I've studied something that goes like this: Special-vocational degree,
developing network solutions. (Level of studies ranging from quite
basic to university level) Basically it includes designing and
developing specified tools that utilize network in some way. Tools
used included C/C++, Java/JavaScript, PHP. Though I have worked with
VisualBasic, ASP, TCL and some other languages.
Nowdays I mostly work basically with PHP and SQL of some sort.
(Usually with MySQL, Postgre or Oracle) +xhtml & css
Oh, and of course there is High school.
Also, at the fall I'm hoping to get to this school which teaches
interactivity designing. Basically everything ranging from physical UI
design to game-, concept- or web design. However, my aim would to
specialize in UI design. (And, of course, ultimately have my own
company. 8) I've already cleared my way to last ~30 persons, now it's
30% change of getting in. 26th day are final exams and interviews for
the school and after that it's a months wait and results should be
here. Keep your thumbs up! :)
Next to UI related stuff. I've worked, in some way or another, with
www-applications for about 6-8 years. Also I like to educate myself so
I've taken some courses and trainings on it. Also, I was in charge of
design, production and maintaining of information gathering and
analysis tools at Inmet Mining, Pyhäsalmi mine Oy. Europe's deepest
metal ore mine and most technologically advanced mine in the world.
Some of those tools are used by miners who didn't have very much
experience with computers. Hence they needed to be easy to use yet
able to utilize enough power, for experienced user, to dig out every
last piece of information needed, regarding of i.e. certain ore
loading machine.
At my current job (head of sales, at paper. usually I lots of other
things too) I've created complete network-based software for the
shop's check-out. It also includes real time accounting for store,
billing and web-shop. Of course all this is wrapped to single user
interface. Which, sadly, has as good UI as I would like but there are
other matters which keep me busy from re-creating the whole system.
I've always been interested of UI design and have read pretty much
everything I've come across with. Of course, depending of the source.
;) When designing something I've always tried position myself as the
regular user and tried to forget all the "invisible" little helpers
that I am used to, since regular user usually doesn't have a clue.
Moms and dads actually make pretty good user test subjects as they
don't use computers that much but know their way around. ;)
I've also made initial design for a game called Notrium.
Lately I've made some initial mockups for ROS.
For software library:
http://devnet.dnsalias.net/guidesign/software_library_v2.jpg
And for ROS start menu:
http://devnet.dnsalias.net/guidesign/start_menu.jpg
Hmm. This turned to another rant, it seems.

Hi all
We need to vote on the UI Coordinator Vote. This will take 2 weeks
according to our voting rules and only committers may participate. If
you're not listed as a committer but participate in the project in an
important way (testing/web work) then talk to an existing committer to
get a recommendation.
For voting rules see:

I love that site design. That is how reactos.org should look.
Thanks

Hi all
There's interest in forming an interface team, and I think it's worth
exploring. This team would be responsible for all visual styling that
goes on in the project. This includes ReactOS UI design and the look &
feel of the website.
So far both mf (as known on IRC, and has come up with most of our
current icons in ReactOS) and Mikko Tikkanen (has done a great mock-up
for the site: http://devnet.dnsalias.net/guidesign/web_mockup.jpg)
have shown interest in heading this team. If anyone else wants to
throw their hat into the ring - feel free to do so.
It'll probably come down to a vote - but first if the respective
people could tell everyone more about themselves and perhaps the
related UI experience they have.
Regards
Jason
