Which "ros-desktop.bmp" are you talking about? I could not find this file name in my ROS tree.
As there was already a propose of another side menu picture, I show you the results of the two different bitmaps. Do you really think, the white one looks better?
Well - as always - it's a matter of taste.

But there is one more problem (also with thebackground image): When using a display mode with not more than 256 colors, it really looks ugly. May be we should switch to the simple blue one, if there are not enough colors available?
