The only formula offered to me (for starting
ReactOS) has been shot
down, even though I did not understand it completely anyway. It
soundes like Robert was saying that I need to boot with a DOS disk,
be it M$ (Micro-expensive-$oft) or freeDOS, before I can run ReactOS.
Thomas says (regarding the only way offered to me) that it is very
bad and may cause various problems, but does not offer an
alternative. What kinds of problems? What alternatives are there?
My original question was to request the location of a HOWTO.
I would like to see this OS in action. Further, I would like to try
to run some DOS and Windows programs, just to find out where ReactOS
is, and how far it has left to go. Screenshots are o.k., but I would
like to play with it and see what I can (and cannot) do.
You very specifically asked about the -bin.zip file. The site isn't
quite clear about this, but you'd better download the CD image or one
of the emulators with ReactOS preloaded. Either way, you really should
read
http://www.reactos.com/en/content/view/full/260
because that definitely answers even your first question.
You made me go back and look at my original post. The only question was
"Is there a HOWTO somewhere?". The rest consisted of comments or
statements (to be precise).
In regards to the archive file, I merely stated that I downloaded it,
extracted it, and could not find documentation within it.
When I said "I need to know how to get it running.", I was not refering
to the archive file but rather to the extracted content, namely ReactOS.
Thanks for the link. I'm downloading the ISO even as I type this. I
guess I'm going to have to move my partitions around a little and create
a FAT boot partition. Would there be any advantage to FAT32 over FAT16
with ReactOS?
I haven't had the need for a FAT partition since I walked away from M$
Wingbloze (MS Windows), and that was on an older HDD.
I'm confident that I will do better with this now that you have pointed
out the install CD ISO. After I finish downloading that image, I'll
search my memory on how to burn it to a CD. (It's been a while.)
I've only started reading your linked web page, but am already finding
good information. Thank you.
