Hi Jan
ROS Explorer being far from finished doesn't seem like a valid reason to start from scratch again. There's no reason you can't write an alternative, but I do think that you should first consider furthering
ROS Explorer. Another plus for ROS Explorer is that it's written in C++ and can be compiled with MingW. A Delphi shell will not easily be included with the ReactOS distribution - but perhaps that's not what you want anyway. These are not reasons not to begin work on your file manager - just things to be aware of before you begin.
The webpage for ROS Explorer is here: http://www.sky.franken.de/explorer/
The source code is in the ReactOS source under: reactos\subsys\system\explorer
Cheers Jason

VERY well said Brian! It seems to be here a strong opposing force to anything that it is not coded in plain C, I just say: Good luck and very best wishes with your project Jan Tisje!!
Mauricio
PS: Sorry, I'm not an active ROS developer, I went for other projects that meets more my current needs, but when I can give my sincere opinions here, I do it.. I just want the best to this project, and censorship is not in my list, unless it is something harmful or VERY contradictive... I think an alternate explorer will not harm anybody, even if it is written in other language ;)
Best regards and best wishes to every one with all iniciative regarding this project!

Well, by using delphi your working against the OSS character of ROS, that is, it couldn't be used in the ROS project. There's no OSS Delphi compiler, and there are legal problems with delphi as well (see XPDE). And as last point, afaik Delph isn't crossplatform.

Actually there is Lazarus http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org It is open source and aims to be source compatible with Delphi. It uses Freepascal compiler as backend which makes it quite portable.

You do not know anything about Delphi. ;-)
It actually is (limited) crossplatform, as there is an implementation for linux named Kylix.
and it may be free (I do not know and do not want to know details), as there is the emerging lazarus project. lazarus is near to finished for basic functions. Lazarus will be fully cross platform.
My program nearly compiled on lazarus. It complained about a missing gcc (i did not investigate this issue further) well, some VCL components are still missing. http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/
In my opinion, if you say, windows is good, because of it's ease of use, you must say Delphi is good too. so, ReactOS without Delphi in focus is only half it could be.

Jan

You have to balance a few developers wanting to contribute Delphi source code and all future ReactOS developers needing to spend the extra time to setup a development environment capable of compiling Delpi source code. ReactOS currently depend on a minimum of tools and thats the way it should be IMHO. For a simple test, try seeing how long it will take you to setup an environment that is capable of building gcc which has many dependencies.

Though I don't program in Delphi, I would vote FOR making Delphi our second preferred language. The freePascal compiler which is capable of compiling Delphi source is plattform indipendend (or simple extended). It is free and since it is a compiler, it will integrate well (think so) into make. As you know, make is an universal tool and rather extensible.
BTW: This is just an opinion. I have no experience with Delphy/FPC nor do I really understand the current build system

I used to use Delphi, until I discovered C/C++.
I think we shouldn't include any Delphi code for the ReactOS, although applications should be able to use it if they wish.

Hi,
thank you for all the comments, Most sound positive, some problems were mentioned. Let's see it as an experiment, and let me try. It will "do no harm" ;-)
I will try to answer the most important issues.
The project will not join the main ReactOS sources I think... at least not too soon.
I hope Lazarus is finished before ReactOS is ;-) So, there will be the option to port the file manager to Lazarus.
I wrote a mail to the author of ROS explorer, to find out the state of his work...
Well, anything I forgot?
bye
Jan
BTW. Does there exist a OSS-Compiler which is capable of compiling Delphi source? I think such thing like FreePascal will do, but the VCL is the Problem... What'ts actually?

It seems to be what some are trying to do with the OSFree project - a clone of IBM's OS/2 Warp ver 4. http://www.osfree.org http://groups.yahoo.com/group/osfree . I am hoping those working on OSFree (and ReactOS) won't heed those words/comments since it might bring both under scrutiny of SCO who seems to want to destroy Linux.
