Hi,
I've just been able to make ReactOS up & running, but whilst trying to launch the File Explorer, a bluescreen occurred. :-( See the attached screenshot I made with my virtual machine (VirtualBox 2.0.6).

Try setting it to Win2k, unless that didn't work. Also, all vm's aren't created equal and unless I missed something the only vm's that are officially supported are vmware and qemu.

The explorer now works fine...but the Display Settings went mad: only 16 colors...and if you change that in the corresponding dialog, nothing happens. :-(((((

I use Other/Other to avoid OS oriented "optimizations". No problems encountered so far as of today.
Kind regards, Sylvain Petreolle

Well...another trouble: The display resolution falls back to 800×600 @ 16 colors, and I can't change it in any way. Does this mean that I shall avoid 1024×768...? I have already changed the VM settings to "Other".

I now have the reason for the strange 16-color behavior: the installation of the VirtualBox Guest Additions. Don't install them, then it will work.
Resolution is now 1024×768 @ 24 bit color depth.
However, I found my ReactOS installation to go very slowly after trying to install software (Acrobat Reader).
And: When creating a new desktop icon, the whole desktop freezes, and all icons and even the taskbar disappear.

Well at some point there is not much you can do. ReactOS is incomplete and unstable as it is still in alpha. You cannot expect it to function 100% correctly. Granted, its a lot better. A year or so it was a challenge to get it to boot.
Some things, like explorer, are not in the best shape and the only thing you can do is to join the project and assist in the development and improve those aspects and the underlying system component. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that someone had written a new and improved explorer implementation for ROS but it is waiting on the completion of some underlying system components that are needed in order for it to run.

I can imagine that. But even Linux took some 8 years to become really useful (= a practical replacement for established OSes like WinNT or commercial UNIX- family systems). The earlier RectOS becomes "useful" the better: There are many people around who are fed up with WinVista, but don't wanna dare to jump into cold water & learn a completely new OS.

May I say it this way: What I cannot do for you is work on the source-code itself (I simply don't have the time for this)...but I can join you & do thorough testing...for instance, how well standard Windows SW integrate into ReactOS.
