Perhaps its the VBE driver? I mean, maybe your BIOS says it supports it but there's a problem further down the line. Delete the file reactos\system32\drivers\vbemp.sys and give it another try.

thanks jason, that fixed it. it now boots to desktop, but the computer still freezes when explorer is accessed. anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I have this problem with a Rage 128, too So it seems to be a problem in the VBE-code and the VESA-BIOS on the VGA-Card
