http://laptop.media.mit.edu/ I sent them an e-mail about using ReactOS on their $100 laptop. It could run Win programs (probably more needed by students). laptop @ media . mit . edu Could ROS be a viable alternative to using Linux?
Hi Tom,
Since ROS is still in alpha stage, I don't think it's ready for such a task yet. There are a lot of features not implemented yet in ROS, and it needs a lot of debugging and testing.
Cya!

I am already in discussion with someone with the project about getting us prototype hardware.

Since it is an MIT project, one could hope that the science majors and/or programming students would see it as a 'learning experience' to work with the ROS source code(?).
I think that for some time to come ROS will be in an alpha stage. Even though the foundation is getting more and more stable there's still a lot of small things missing that would make most Windows apps unusable. Even as ROS improves I think the target audience will be mainly people with computer experience, as opposed to the children the laptop is targetting. Also I think that linux was made with FOSS in focus. Even though that ROS is completely FOSS, it seems as if most FOSS projects where made for *nix platforms, and probably will compile and run better on *nix based platforms. (Because I believe that these kids will some day want to download and compile code) To sum it up, I don't think ROS is ready for such a task, and wont be in time for the $100 laptop project.

Since it is an MIT project ($100 laptop), one would think it would be a challenge for the computer science/programmers at the college to take the source code of ROS and make it more useful for such projects(?).

I just had a look at their website, and I think it is a good idea to ask them, if they would like to improve ReactOS and use it for their project. Don't forget, that the children that will use these laptops won't need things like DirectX, soundcards and so on, so a ReactOS 0.5 will fulfill thier needs. They need a slim and reliable OS, not something fat that does everything Windows XP does. And which OS could be used for this laptop? Windows is to big, linux is big, but could be made smaller (a lot of work). I don't know how these people think about us, but I think we could at least ask them, it's worth a try.
Greets,

As already said, Steven is dealing with this.
Plus, just so nobody gets the wrong idea, the request is being made for the hardware to develop and test on. ReactOS is not being presented as a replacement for Linux at this moment in time. The hope is that it will be a viable option for the future. Getting a few machines now helps this cause.

That is what I was asking; if it was a viable alternative to Linux. Thanks for the reply and information.
I did ask and received an automated reply.
