Installing ReactOS with other OSes
by Rakhesh Sasidharan 06 Aug '04

Hi all! Am thinking of trying out ReactOS on my home machine, but thought I'd clarify a few things before going ahead. My current setup is this: I have a primary master disk, on which I have Windows 98 (primary partition), FreeBSD (primary partition), Windows XP and Linux (logical partitions). I use GRUB as my bootloader. I have a secondary master disk, on which I plan to install FreeDOS (primary partition), and ReactOS (primary partition). I checked up with the FreeDOS folks and it seems installing FreeDOS into my existing setup is a no problem -- FreeDOS would need its equivalent of config.sys and autoexec.bat to be present on my C: (which is the Windows 98 partition), and other than that there should be no hassles (FreeDOS will install its bootsector on its partition only, and I can get GRUB to load it from there). >From the installation pages of ReactOS, I figure that if I were to install ReactOS into my current setup, it would add itself to the Windows XP boot manager. Coz my Windows 98 partition is currently active, and that's where the XP boot manager is installed, and that's where the ntldr and boot.ini files are located. Righto? But suppose I don't want to boot ReactOS through the XP boot manager, can I do the following: make the ReactOS partition as active beforehand, and so when ReactOS installs itself it will find that the active partition has no boot manager or files etc and so will install the bootsectors to this partition ... and then I can use GRUB to load these bootsectors to boot into ReactOS? Is this possible? ReactOS wont overwrite my MBR (GRUB) or XP boot manager etc in this case right? Thanks, Rakhesh

RE: [ros-general] Small issue with vmware and a small gripe

Maybe a couple of weeks of sun and beer? I've never managed to get into the spirit of coding on Reactos. I would love to, but I think at present everything is far too low level and the learning curve is just too great for me. -----Original Message----- From: Betam4x [mailto:eek2121@comcast.net] Sent: 06 August 2004 07:46 To: ros-general(a)reactos.com Subject: [ros-general] Small issue with vmware and a small gripe Hello all, long time no talk, working 2 jobs sucks ;) Anyways, one small issue here...the vmware wizard no longer pops up during installation...it used to at one point. BTW i'm using VMWare 4.5.2 build 8848 It's been a while since i actually worked on any part of ROS...mainly i haven't had the motivation to code or work on any projects at ALL. Anyone know of a cure for such a problem? I used to go DAYS coding and working on ideas i think up, now...nothing. Can't even bring myself to open ultraedit32 or visual C++... _______________________________________________ ros-general mailing list ros-general(a)reactos.com http://reactos.com/mailman/listinfo/ros-general

Here is a short and sweet draft of a ReactOS newsletter for the month of July- comments and suggestions are more than welcome.
by Wierd Wierd 04 Aug '04

04 Aug '04

ReactOS Newsletter, July 2004 ReactOS is an Open Source project licensed under the GNU General Public License, which aims at the high mark of being a commercially viable alternative for markets currently using versions of Microsoft Windows(tm) based on the NT kernel, such as Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, and Windows XP, with full application and driver support. While development of Reactos is still in its early stages, great amounts of effort have been poured into the project over the past month. Art Yerks and Alex Ionesco have been diligently working on ironing out all the snags with their TCP/IP implementation, and with several other networking related tasks. While it is still uncertain when truly functional networking will be working under ReactOS, the work done this month has brought that goal tangibly closer. Another boon this month was Structured Exception Handling. While not terribly interesting to most users, it is an important feature of a stable NT based kernel, which provides a means to trap exception faults, and prevent them from causing other problems for the host. S.E.H is a big step toward a functionally stable environment within ReactOS. While work continues, ReactOS now has a crude, but serviceable S.E.H implementation. Other things that have received attention this month are preliminary sound card support, a performance rewrite of the FAT file system driver, fixes for removable media support, and the beginnings of porting WINE's DirectX implementation, in addition to a multitude of compatibility and bug fixes. For more information, please visit the ReactOS homepage at HTTP://WWW.ReactOS.COM . Feel free to visit us on our FreeNode IRC channel, #Reactos, or on our mailing lists. We look forward to hearing from you! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - 100MB free storage! http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail

Linux World in Germany
by Steven Edwards 29 Jul '04

29 Jul '04

Hello, I need to know who all is planning on comming to LinuxWorld.de so I can get us passes. We are limited to three exhibitor passes for free and any extra are 15 Euros I think so if you are going to come give me your name now. Seeing as how we only have a small space I dont want our booth to overflow or anything so maybe you just want to get a visitors pass and stop by and say hi. At the last LinuxWorld is was just myself and GvG so I hope that more will come this time. We only have two chairs as well so if there is going to be more of us showing up then we will have to trade off. The list is Me (99% sure), GvG, KJK:Hyperion, w3seek and ? Crash report
by jh 25 Jul '04

25 Jul '04

ReactOS-core-20040724 Advent laptop - 850 MHz Pentium 3 - 320 Mb ram Having down-loaded the latest snapshot, I was having a look around this version for the first time. >From the start button I had gone into, Browse Files - Drives - C - Program Files - Amaya. From there, with all the pop-up windows still open, I moved the mouse to the rosexplorer item at the top of the first pop-up window from the start button, and click on it. ros then crashed to the blue screen, with these error messages: Bug detected (code 1e param 0 0 0 0) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Page Fault Exception: 14(2) Processor: 0 CS:EIP 8:c00012db <ntoskrnl.exe: 12db> cr2 f000ff83 cr3 1317c000 Proc: c1570768 Pid: 4 <csrss> Thrd: c15c6e08 Tid: 26 DS 10 ES 10 FS 30 GS 10 EAX: 00000001 EBX: 00000000 ECX: f000ff83 EDX: c15c6948 EBP: deacedbc ESI: 00c10eb0 ESP: deaced3c EDI: deacef84 EFLAGS: 00010292 kESP deaced3c kernel stack base deacc000 Frames: <hal.dll: 32c6> <win32k.sys: 1323e> <win32k.sys: 133f4> <win32k.sys: 1c701> <win32k.sys: 1ccdc> <win32k.sys: 1d005> <ntoskrnl.exe: 361d> <77E6FC5B> I have have repeated the moves above, this time rosexplorer appeared (I may have clicked on a empty part of the desktop window), and ros crashed again, but this time there was no blue screen and no error message. All there was, was a screen with one quarter green with vertical lines and the other three quarters were red with horizontal lines which changed to squares then back to lines, looping constantly between the two (lines then squares). Hope this can be of some help. Regards, jh

ROSLive CD - trial run
by Wesley Parish 22 Jul '04

22 Jul '04

FWIW, I burnt the ROSLive CD while in Win98SE, and then had a look at it. I could fire up the cmd.exe file while in Win98 and it ran and did everything I asked it to. A bit bare - I'll try to roll my own LiveCD with a few apps I need like AbiWord, emacs, etc. Any caveats, any warnings, any ideas, any suggestions? (I.e., is there a specified layout for files/directories? Or do they go any old where?) Very impressive - now I'll have to grab some old unused machine and test it out on that. Wesley Parish "Sharpened hands are happy hands. "Brim the tinfall with mirthful bands" - A Deepness in the Sky, Vernor Vinge "I me. Shape middled me. I would come out into hot!" I from the spicy that day was overcasked mockingly - it's a symbol of the other horizon. - emacs : meta x dissociated-press

ReactOS 0.3.0 TODO
by Steven Edwards 19 Jul '04

19 Jul '04

Hello All, Well Arty and Alex along with a lot of help from others have networking almost to a usable state. So far the wish/feature list includes: - OpenOffice - FireFox - IRC - CVS - SEH (done?) Lets get some ideas of other things that need to be fixed or implemented. Sound support is going to be a post 0.3.0 bug for me as I dont have the time or knowlege to try and fix winmm/mmdrv. If you want to see sound on 0.3.0 you need to step up to the plate. Thanks Steven __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! RE: [ros-general] ReactOS 0.3.0 TODO
by Colin Burn 13 Jul '04

For what its worth... I think getting a single networking app, such as cvs, running is sufficient to warrant a release. Other apps will follow and I think holding back until networking is complete is a waste of time. Getting some form of networking working should generate interest in the project and may get those illusive new developers to join in. Col
