actually, Windows 2000 persists mount points and drive letters correctly.
How does it do that I'm not sure. It also detects and handles the removal
of partitions, but not resizing or moving them
You can find it here for XP:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\:
\??\Volume{b247edb5-3486-11d8-a3ad-806d6172696f}
\??\Volume{b247edb7-3486-11d8-a3ad-806d6172696f}
..
\DosDevices\C:
\DosDevices\D:
..
NT4's windisk.exe stored its settings in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Disk\Information entry, but this seems no more to be used
nowadays.
