It's (of course) somewhere in the registry. I can't remember, now. But you gan gather this info from readmes of the ext2-IFS for NT/2000. It's essentially a asociation between Volume UIDs and Letters which become created as ??\X:

actually, Windows 2000 persists mount points and drive letters correctly. How does it do that I'm not sure.
