Just a small request, after having to endure Microsoft's attempts to make everything "mine".
Can we PLEASE not mirror Microsoft's: - My Computer - My Network Places - My Documents - My Pictures - My Music
and so on.
Can we at least have "The Computer" "Network" "Documents" etc. instead? Something a little less selfish-sounding please!
May seem like a stupid request, but I have spent a long time tweaking Windows to stop it from reminding me that my files are, in fact, my files, along with anything anyone else in my family save on my computer.
So, erm, can we get rid of all this "me me me", or at least make it optional?

I totally agree. I don't see the need for some of these folders either (my pictures? my music? are those standards for windows? Because everywhere i've been i've seen them empty)

I've noticed this too - on my laptop, My Documents contains My Pictures and My Music. Inside "My Pictures" is a shortcut to "Shared Pictures" in the "All Users" folder, containing some really bland images. As if we need an example of what a picture looks like...
Still, "My Network Places" is a bit of a lame name, IMO. I preferred good old "Network Neighborhood" or just plain "Network", like it is on my machine. Having your favourite network places in the main folder of that is useful, however.
At the end of the day, it may be Microsoft's way to make Windows a bit more user-friendly, but its far too over the top, I think.

ACK, and they're empty for not being a hostage of M$-trojans (=mediaplayer) or other virusses.

I don't see a good reason for not using the familiar Microsoft terminlogy in vanilla ReactOS. But ReactOS is open source so you can create your own distribution and use whatever terminlogy you want.

He didn't say "lets change My Computer to This Box", he said "My Computer" to "The Computer". Though i would prefer "This Computer".
As long as its just semantic, and the meaning is still the same i see no reason to avoid being clear. i would much prefer "This Computer" to "My Computer". But i guess ROS could have themes which supported different names for system icons(should be easily implemented)

Yes, "This Computer" does make more sense.
Maybe we can have this as some sort of setup option? vandread on IRC suggested the use of "doc" for Documents, but that's more Linux-like. So maybe we could have options to have things like Program Files as "bin" or something? I don't know, that's just a guess.
I'd like to see this easily customizable, if possible?

In the translation team we are working on a XML document which will hold the language. I see no reason that a standard XML document can't be expanded/changed with a secondary external XML document, which would be contained in the theme. Thus any and all occurences of "This Computer" or "My Computer" would only be defined once(unless some programmer have hardcodded into his program).
So on boot, load language XML document. Apply theme(overwrite settings).

Well, i said i'd like that better, for myself, i don't think it should be the ReactOS default though. But naming schemes would be sweet :)

I know d*** well that I hated the My Documents, My Computer, etc, when I first saw it. I don't like being treated like a kiddie and spoken to in little more than baby-language.
Perhaps a tutorial on naming the computer parts for newbies? (As long as it's not in *.hlp. That's interesting, but mostly irrelevant now we've got *.xml. And several quality XML renderers.)

I'm not saying we should change it entirely, but to just remove the un-necessary "My"s that are appearing everywhere. It won't be long before we have "My Favorites" and "My Outlook Express" and "My Internet Explorer"...
Just a preference really, but I've had 3 people agree that "My" is un-necessary. It's no biggie, just wondered what everyone else thinks?

The PDC build of Longhorn has "Computer", "Documents" and "Network".
Apparently the Microsoft developers prefer these names, and the "My" prefix on previous Windows versions was added later by marketing.

If this is only on longhorn maybe microsoft just changed the names. It doesn't mean that it will be "my computer" in the final release, though i guess a beta would solve that dispute.
What does the PDC of NT 4 or 2k say?

Considering during the Windows setup you need to set up the host name usually, why don't we mirror that and not use "My Computer" - Can you imagine the trouble it'd cause if ReactOS was being deployed over a large network and every hostname was the same?!

Sure, on the network, the names need to be different, however, you will get people confused by giving 'my computer' a different name on each computer (you won't get me confused, nor yourself, but you will get my grandma confused).
Mark
I think that the My Computer issue should be handled like this: The ReactOS desktop will display the Link as "My Computer" but when you go to something like Http://localhost/ (When reactos has a stable and a suitable TCP/IPv4 stack, and a stable HTTP Server) it will register as Http://thenameofyourcomputer/. Unless that is a stupid idea. Internally a loopback driver would be supported as with most internet serving machines, including Linux, and windows. That is what I propose!
Perhaps it would be an idea to allow the use of environment variables in this kind of labels, that way people would be quite free in what naming scheme they use.
Sukotto wrote:

Hmm, I'd prefer some Registry settings.
Don't know where the settings could be though? "Users" control panel?
It could just be a case of having a single setting like "NoMyPrefix" or something? But if they're renameable on the desktop itself (via right-clicking and what-not), it should be fairly simple to change...

In which case it makes no sense, as I tend to share some of the files in My Documents, thus making them Shared Documents.
I can understand the naming of Shared Documents etc. but its just the "MY this, MY that, MY everything" approach. Even if it just had the users name instead of "MY", it'd be a vast improvement.

You are quite free to rename them.

Just a small request, after having to endure Microsoft's attempts to make everything "mine".
Can we PLEASE not mirror Microsoft's:
- My Computer
- My Network Places
- My Documents
- My Pictures
- My Music
and so on.
