I was wondering if, together with the launch of the new website, we should switch our "primary" domain from reactos.com to reactos.org? We have control of both domains. An .org domain seems better suited for a open source project. What do you all think?
Gé van Geldorp (aka gvg@reactos.org :-))
I do not think it is a good idea. for to many people know already .com and a normal person use .com trying find a project or company. then .org. So I think .com is best as primary domain.

(hello everybody, i'm new here :-) I saw an update-article about reactos and was immediately interested)
I agree - .org sounds more like non-profit. When I here a .com name, I can smell the money ...

Always when I search OpenSource or freeware, I initially seacrh in .org. If you look in ICANN documents? you can see? thdt .org means "non-commercial". But thera are a lot of people, who don't know TLD's other that .com and for them you need .com domain.
I have a "dumb" idea, that ReactOS.com must be for newcomers, and ReactOS.org - for peolple interested in development.
Hello,
I suggest to keep .com for official docs and annoucements but use the .org for the wiki website and the mailling list. .com give a certain credibility wether .org is more convenient for the collaboratif work.

PS Where can I find documentation on the installer ? I'm trying to make scripts to install reactos from a working linux into a FAT32 partition

We haven't even been able to maintain one website. What makes you think we could maintain two? Also suppose you want to find out more about ReactOS and are given the two URLs www.reactos.com and www.reactos.org which have different content. Which one has the information you need? That is far from obvious.

.com and .org with different content is to confusing.
However, a redirecting from .com to .org would be possible. It's even possible to show a page with "please, update your bookmarks" or do a dealy for 5 seconds.

It doesnt mind .org or .com if i can find the site and my bookmarks work, but put a 5 seconds delay in the wrong place and i will become anoyed ;) Dont like people wasting my time.

perhaps we should redirect from reactos.com to .org with a short page (with a donation link) explaining our non-profit status and the gpl. cheers Les

Could one be a mirror of the other?
Atm people/websites who already know ReactOS point to *.reactos.com, why should we change that ?

humans are like computers, yesterday the BIOS was all - today its just a word
The search key "link: reactos.org" in Google returns: Results 1 - 10 of about 1,700 for link: reactos.org. (0.08 seconds)
While "link: reactos.com" returns: Results 1 - 10 of about 13,000 for link: reactos.com. (0.09 seconds)
I guess the question is not on which URL to use per se-- but rather, on which URL to use in advocating ReactOS. I'd still vote for reactos.org though, despite its not being well-used. =)
Whether you choose to use .org or .com, what matters is that you guys have made a wonderful job. Kudos to the ReactOS dev team!

I think it's indeed preferable, but of course all old links should be rewritten to prevent link breakage, and also to make it possible to use .com. So for instance, if you would request reactos.com/faq you would be redirected to reactos.org/faq. Maybe it would be best to do this with a permanent redirect (302 iirc) so browsers update their bookmarks, and rss readers update their feeds.

Hi Gé, sorry for the late reply!
Just an idea: reactos.org == ReactOS Foundation (a few static pages for it; minimum manteinance) reactos.com == ReactOS Developer Team (all the remaining info; dynamic)
Anyway fully aliasing the domains seems the most reasonable solution: reactos.org MX 10 reactos.org reactos.org MX 20 dutlru2.lr.tudelft.nl reactos.org MX 30 dutlruw.lr.tudelft.nl reactos.org A 130.161.165.129 reactos.com CNAME reactos.org reactos.biz CNAME reactos.org reactos.info CNAME reactos.org ...

"all the remaining info; dynamic": All ReactOS (main) pages will be static (x)html pages! The static pages will be generated with the RosCMS page generator.
"myReactOS" (user interface for the RosCMS; manage your own login account, etc.), the "support database" and phpbb, mediawiki and bugzilla are the dynamic parts of the new homepage!
my idea: reactos.org => a few pages about the ReactOS foundation; maybe generated with RosCMS; on the same (main) server as reactos.com
generally i think 2 different pages makes no sence. for me the idea of routing reactos.com to reactos.org and push the .org domain is the best
